A Centennial Tradition Comes Alive
The air in Kazanlak hung heavy with the intoxicating scent of oil-bearing roses as the town welcomed thousands of guests for its most iconic annual event. The traditional rose harvest, a centerpiece of the 123rd Rose Day celebrations, drew visitors from across Bulgaria and abroad. This enduring ritual continues to serve as a major cultural magnet, showcasing the unique heritage of the Rose Valley to a global audience.
President Iliana Yotova served as the official guest of honor. She was joined by Kazanlak Mayor Galina Stoyanova, Deputy Tourism Minister Mariela Modeva, Stara Zagora Regional Governor Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kaloian Damyankov, and various local officials. Diplomatic missions and foreign delegations also attended, underscoring the event's international significance.
Folklore, Royalty, and Community Spirit
The morning hours, when rose petals hold the highest concentration of essential oils, provided the backdrop for an authentic cultural immersion. Dressed in colorful traditional folk costumes, harvesters reenacted the age-old picking ritual. Live folk music and dance performances enhanced the festive atmosphere, preserving a distinct piece of Bulgarian identity.
Denitsa Malcheva, the 58th Rose Queen of Kazanlak, alongside her attendants Yoana Miteva and Angela Ivanova, captivated the audience with their grace. Visitors were invited to step into the picturesque rose fields and participate in the harvest themselves. The experience offered more than just observation; it created lasting memories amidst the aromatic plantations.
The rose harvest remains a living symbol of Kazanlak's spirit and respect for generations of growers. By maintaining this link between people and nature, the tradition continues to promote the rich cultural legacy of the Rose Valley, keeping Bulgaria's floral face visible to the world.
