Greece is increasingly attracting senior American cruise travelers, according to a new report by travel insurance provider Squaremouth. The report ranks Greece among the world’s top cruise destinations for travelers aged 65 and older, accounting for 4.9 percent of policy sales in the segment and placing seventh globally.
Greece appears alongside major cruise markets such as Mexico, the United States, the Bahamas, Italy, and Spain, reinforcing its position within the Mediterranean cruise sector as demand for longer and higher-value travel experiences continues to grow.
Seniors opt for longer, higher-value cruises
Senior travelers show a greater willingness to spend on cruise holidays, with 7.7 percent comfortable paying more than 10,000 dollars compared to 4.2 percent of younger travelers. Older travelers spend an average of nearly 7,000 dollars per cruise and are significantly more likely to select itineraries lasting more than two weeks.
The report also found that 95 percent of seniors taking a cruise in 2026 are repeat cruise travelers, highlighting the strong loyalty and experience level of the segment.
Seniors more willing to spend on cruise holidays
Squaremouth data shows seniors are nearly twice as likely as younger travelers to spend more than 10,000 dollars on a cruise holiday. Nearly 50 percent of younger respondents said they planned to spend less than 3,000 dollars on a cruise, compared to 35 percent of seniors.
As cruise budgets increased, older travelers consistently showed a greater willingness to spend across all price ranges above 6,000 dollars. According to the data, seniors were nearly twice as likely as younger travelers to say they were comfortable spending more than 10,000 dollars on a cruise holiday – 7.7 percent compared to 4.2 percent.
The findings come as Greece continues to strengthen its position in the Mediterranean cruise market, particularly among high-spending international travelers seeking longer and experience-driven itineraries.
Greece's growing appeal to older cruise travelers is no surprise, given its rich history and stunning landscapes. But will this trend continue to shape the Mediterranean cruise market, or will new destinations steal the spotlight? Let's see how the industry evolves!
