A Sea of Petals in Kazanlak
Kazanlak once again asserted its status as the capital of beauty and Bulgarian tradition. Some 20,000 participants and spectators filled the streets for the Rose Queen Parade, the grand finale of the 123rd edition of the Rose Festival. For over a century, this town in the heart of the Rose Valley has served as the epicenter of Bulgaria’s most cherished floral celebration.
The atmosphere was thick with the scent of damask roses and the energy of thousands gathered to honor the region’s most famous export: Bulgarian rose oil, often called liquid gold. The event drew residents from across the country and visitors from abroad, all united by the cultural significance of the harvest.
Cultural Showcase and Political Presence
The parade featured dozens of local, national, and international ensembles. Traditional costumes, folk music, and choreography turned the main thoroughfares into a vibrant tapestry of color and movement. It was a display designed to bridge generations and cultures, showcasing the enduring spirit of the valley.
Kazanlak Mayor Galina Stoyanova addressed the crowd with a poem dedicated to her hometown, reflecting on the city as a "small nest in a rose bush" where she was born and where she plans to grow old. Her words underscored the deep emotional connection locals feel toward the land and its floral heritage.
The event also carried significant political weight. Iliana Yotova, the President of Bulgaria, was among the distinguished guests. She was joined by Mariela Modeva, the Deputy Minister of Tourism, highlighting the state’s support for cultural tourism in the region. The municipality used the occasion to reinforce its reputation for hospitality, proving that the festival is more than a calendar entry—it is a living experience for all who attend.
