Final Hours for Pilgrims in Belgrade

The Virgin's Belt, one of the most significant Orthodox Christian relics, will remain in Belgrade until Saturday, June 6. This marks the final opportunity for believers to pay their respects at the St Sava's Temple before the sacred object is returned to Greece. The relic will be available for veneration throughout the morning, specifically before and during the final Divine Liturgy.

The Serbian Orthodox Church has confirmed that Patriarch Porfirije will preside over the liturgy on June 6. Following the service, a formal farewell ceremony will take place. While the exact start time for the liturgy has not been officially published, it typically begins around 7:30 AM. Consequently, the ceremonial send-off and the departure of the relic are expected to occur in the late morning, likely between 10:00 and 11:00 AM, once the religious services conclude.

A Historic Spiritual Event

The Serbian Orthodox Church has issued an official statement urging the faithful, clergy, and monastic community to participate in this rare spiritual gathering. The Church emphasizes that passing under the Holy Belt grants a special blessing from the Virgin Mary to all present. This event marks a profound moment for Serbian Orthodoxy, as the relic returns to its home at the Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos after an unprecedented stay in Serbia.

In its address, the Church called on the nation to offer heartfelt gratitude to the Mother of God and Jesus Christ for the blessing bestowed upon the capital and the Serbian people. Believers are encouraged to bid a dignified farewell not only to the relic but also to the Archimandrite of Vatopedi, Ephraim, and his monastic brotherhood. The Serbian Orthodox Church expressed immense gratitude to the monks for allowing the relic to reside in Serbia after six centuries.

The statement highlighted the invaluable gifts received during this period, citing the boundless love shown to the Serbian people, the unity embraced, and the peace that has filled hearts. Large crowds are expected at St Sava's Temple tomorrow morning, as thousands seek to witness the relic one last time and join the liturgy before its journey back to Mount Athos.
