From his earliest years, Simeon displayed extraordinary gifts and an ascetic nature. He ate sparingly, shunned luxury, and amazed those around him with his wisdom and piety even as a child. His early life was marked by tragedy; following the death of his father and a devastating earthquake that struck Antioch, Simeon’s path turned toward complete spiritual dedication.

Life on the Pillar and Miracles

As a young man, Simeon traveled to the monastery of Venerable John the Stylite, where he began ascetic practices that exceeded ordinary human endurance. Even in childhood, he stepped onto a pillar, earning the title "Stylite" (pillar-dweller). He spent days and nights in prayer, fasting, and praising God. This vertical isolation was not merely physical withdrawal but a intense spiritual engagement with the divine.

The Lord granted Simeon many gifts. He healed the sick, cast out unclean spirits, prophesied future events, and comforted those seeking counsel. His prayers became a source of strength for many enduring illness, suffering, and life’s hardships. People flocked to him, viewing his intercession as a powerful anchor in turbulent times.

The Legacy of Divine Mountain

A pivotal location in his life is Mount Divna, after which he received the epithet "Divnogorac." Here, he built a monastery, gathered monks, and continued his ascetic life. Although he sought solitude and silence, news of his miracles spread far and wide. Pilgrims from various regions arrived seeking his blessing, advice, and consolation.
