Holy Belt Veneration Raises Funds for Aid

Patriarch Porfirije of the Serbian Orthodox Church has announced a decisive move regarding the funds collected during the recent veneration of the Holy Belt of the Theotokos. The sacred relic, housed in the Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos, drew thousands of pilgrims to Belgrade earlier this month. Igumen Jefrem of Vatopedi offered all donations received during the public display to the Serbian Patriarchate. In response, Patriarch Porfirije directed that these funds be allocated specifically to support Serbian families in Kosovo and Metohiya, as well as for other charitable purposes.

The decision reflects a deep sense of pastoral responsibility and brotherly love within the church hierarchy. The official statement from the Serbian Orthodox Church highlighted the Patriarch's gratitude toward Igumen Jefrem and the monastic community. By channeling these resources toward families in Kosovo, the church aims to provide tangible support during difficult times, reinforcing its role as a pillar of social and spiritual aid in the region.

A Sacred Relic Returns to Belgrade

The Holy Belt is one of the most revered relics in Orthodox Christianity. According to tradition, it was woven by the Virgin Mary herself and given to the Apostle Thomas at her ascension. The relic has a profound historical connection to Serbia. Saint Prince Lazar is said to have received the belt after defeating the Bulgarian army around 1330. A decade later, he gifted it to the Vatopedi Monastery, where it has remained protected within the altar of the katholikon for centuries.

The belt rarely leaves the monastic walls of Mount Athos. Its arrival in Belgrade on May 20 marked a rare and significant event for Serbian believers. The relic was first displayed at the Ascension Church before being carried through the city streets during the Spasovdan liturgy. It was subsequently placed in the Temple of Saint Sava on Vračar, where it remained for public veneration until June 5. The influx of pilgrims demonstrated the enduring spiritual significance of the relic for the Serbian faithful.

This charitable allocation underscores the intersection of religious tradition and social support in the Balkans. The Serbian Orthodox Church continues to play a vital role in maintaining community cohesion, particularly for populations facing displacement or economic hardship.
