Sean Strickland has regained the UFC middleweight title in an unexpected turn of events at UFC 328 in Newark, New Jersey. The controversial American defeated undefeated Khamzat Chimaev after a grueling five-round match, winning by split decision (48-47, 47-48, 48-47). This marked the first loss in Chimaev's career and Strickland's second reign as divisional champion.

Strickland's victory is even more remarkable considering he entered the fight as a significant underdog, with bookmakers setting odds over 5-1 in favor of the Chechen fighter. However, Strickland, known for his ability to upend favorites, repeated his 2023 feat against Israel Adesanya, shocking the world once again.

Drama in the Fifth Round and Tactical Victory

Chimaev began the bout in his characteristic style, quickly taking Strickland down and exerting control on the ground throughout the first round. It appeared that the fight would end as quickly and decisively as many of Chimaev's previous bouts. However, Strickland survived the initial onslaught and in the second round, completely reversed the course of the fight. Successfully defending takedowns, Strickland even managed to take Chimaev down, setting a new pace and relentlessly attacking with his signature front kick.

Chimaev's performance visibly deteriorated as the fight progressed, possibly due to the intense weight cutting required before the bout. Strickland continued to dominate in the third round, while Chimaev struggled to keep up in exchanges. Although Chimaev managed to win the fourth round with a late takedown, in the decisive fifth round, Strickland was more active and precise, securing the win in the eyes of two out of three judges.

Unexpected Apologies and Sportsmanship

After the fight, which was marred by harsh words and controversial statements leading up to the match, a different picture emerged. Chimaev demonstrated sportsmanship by personally placing the belt around his opponent's waist. Strickland, in a surprising move, addressed the audience with an apology.

"I want to apologize to my American, Muslim, and Christian fans. I went too far. I respect you all," Strickland said after receiving the belt.

"Chechnya has great fighters. They are wild, and he is a wild one. I should have been a better example, but I'm trying to sell these fights for you, the fans."

Strickland also paid tribute to his opponent's remarkable resilience.

"That son of a gun just wouldn't quit. I hit him with everything I had, and he just kept coming. Wild."

Strickland's Path to the Top

This victory brings Strickland's professional record to 31 wins and 7 losses. It marks his second title defense in the UFC middleweight division, which he lost to Dricus Du Plessis in a close battle in January 2024. Known for his endurance, unique style, and unpredictable nature, Strickland has proven himself once again as one of the most intriguing and dangerous fighters in the world of mixed martial arts.
