Prayer Over Distraction
Thousands of believers have been standing in long lines outside the Temple of Saint Sava for days, hoping to venerate the Belt of the Virgin Mary. Amidst the crowds, well-known priest Predrag Popovic has issued a clear message to all pilgrims. He reminded the public that the time spent waiting is not lost. Instead, it represents a vital part of the spiritual journey and a unique opportunity for inner prayer.
Father Predrag specifically addressed how believers behave while standing in line. He stressed that technology and secular conversations should be left behind. According to him, time should not be wasted on fiddling with phones or making casual chatter. Instead, this period should be wisely used to speak with God about personal burdens and to seek spiritual relief.
"One important note for all of you waiting in line to kiss the Belt of the Virgin Mary, and for everyone waiting to venerate a relic in Ostrog, Tuman, or anywhere else: Do not fiddle with your phone, talk, and spend time on other things," Father Predrag said. "While you wait in line, pray. Pray to the Virgin Mary, specifically now when you are waiting to bow to the Belt or to Saint Basil of Ostrog, or ultimately to the Lord God, for whatever troubles you, for the problems you have, so that the Lord hears you."
Waiting Is Part of the Devotion
The priest also explained a common misconception believers face after waiting for hours only to spend a few seconds in front of the relic. Many complain, feeling that they waited too long for a moment that lasts too briefly, thinking they did nothing. However, Father Predrag emphasizes that the waiting itself is prayer.
"When you get to that place, just make the sign of the cross, kiss it, and say: Amen. Waiting is actually prayer. That is why many people complain... they say: We waited so many hours, we went inside, kissed it for a few seconds, and had to leave. And what did we do? Nothing. Exactly that. While you were waiting in line, you were praying," he explained.
When believers finally reach the relic, the procedure is simple. The pilgrim simply makes the sign of the cross, kisses the relic, and says Amen. The main spiritual preparation has already been completed in the line.
Extended Stay in Belgrade
Reflecting on the presence of this major Christian relic in the capital, Father Predrag highlighted that this is an exceptional opportunity and a great honor granted to the faithful with the blessing of Patriarch Porfirije and high-ranking church officials.
Due to unprecedented interest and a constant influx of believers, a decision was made to keep the Belt of the Virgin Mary in Belgrade longer than originally planned. Although the relic was supposed to be returned to the Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos on May 29, its stay at the Temple of Saint Sava has been extended until Monday, June 1. This extension provides a chance for everyone still waiting to approach and venerate the sacred object.
