Mitochondrial Officers Seize 80,000 Cigarettes at Danube Bridge 2 Near Vidin
Mitochondrial officers from the Regional Directorate of Customs in Rousse have seized 80,000 cigarettes (4,000 boxes) and 50 packages of 2 kg of tobacco during a vehicle inspection at Danube Bridge 2 near Vidin.
The seizure took place on April 24, 2026, when customs officers stopped a Bulgarian-registered truck for an exit inspection from the country in the direction of Romania. The inspection revealed the illicit tobacco products concealed within the vehicle's cargo.
Danube Bridge 2, connecting Vidin, Bulgaria, to Calafat, Romania, is a significant transit point for both legal and illegal goods. The customs authorities have been vigilant in their efforts to combat smuggling and protect national and European Union revenue.
This latest seizure underscores the ongoing challenge of tobacco smuggling in the region and the determined response by Bulgarian customs officials to intercept such activities. The confiscated tobacco products will be subject to further legal proceedings, with the aim of preventing their illegal distribution and sale.
