The connection between German football and the Bulgarian national team deepens with each passing season. Lukas Petkov, the striker who played a key role in helping Elversberg secure promotion to the Bundesliga, is now dedicating his time during national team camps to learning the Bulgarian language. The forward has been selected by head coach Alexander Dimitrov for the upcoming June friendlies against Montenegro and Moldova, marking a significant return to the international stage for the player.
A Bridge Between Cultures
Born in Friedberg, Bavaria, Petkov’s link to Bulgaria comes through his paternal grandfather. Despite living and playing in Germany his entire life, he made his debut for the Bulgarian national team three years ago. With no local community to practice the language with in Germany, the national team camps have become his primary classroom. "My Bulgarian is still not good enough, even though I try to communicate with my teammates in Bulgarian," Petkov admitted, showing a genuine effort to connect with his heritage.
The upcoming fixtures in Plovdiv against Montenegro and in Chisinau against Moldova serve as crucial preparation for the UEFA Nations League. These matches carry weight beyond just points, as performance in the tournament could potentially lead to a playoff spot for the 2028 European Championship. Petkov’s integration into the squad adds a layer of depth and motivation for the team.
Excitement and Ambition
Alongside Petkov, Patrick-Gabriel Galchev also expressed his enthusiasm for the return to the national setup. The former Levski Sofia player shared his joy at being back after a two-year absence. "I am very happy to return to the national team after two years. Thank you to the coaching staff and all the officials. There is a lot of excitement from my side. When it comes to the national team, there is always energy. My ambitions are to win these two matches and make all of Bulgaria happy," Galchev stated.
Galchev, who previously played for the "Blues," also noted the special feeling of seeing his former club win the domestic championship. The combination of returning veterans and motivated new additions like Petkov suggests a strong spirit within the camp as they prepare for the challenges ahead in the Nations League.
