Greece has secured second place globally in the 2026 Blue Flag awards, underscoring the country's commitment to sustainable tourism and coastal quality. Spain held onto the top spot with 794 total awards, an increase of 44 from 2025, while Greece followed closely with 657 distinctions, the same number as last year. Turkey ranked third with 625 awards.
The official announcement of Greece’s awarded beaches, marinas, and tourist boats will take place on May 14, 2026, at the Ploes Floating Venue in Paleo Faliro. The event is organized by the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature, the national operator of the international program.
The Blue Flag is a globally recognized eco-label awarded based on strict criteria, including water quality, cleanliness, safety for bathers, infrastructure and services, and environmental awareness and protection.
Maintaining this high ranking reinforces Greece’s reputation as a safe, clean, and environmentally responsible destination, aligning with the increasing emphasis travelers place on sustainability. It also serves as a powerful promotional tool for local economies and tourism businesses, attracting visitors to Greece's coastal regions.
Parallel to this recognition, educational initiatives are being conducted throughout May, featuring presentations at institutions such as Harokopio University and vocational training schools in Piraeus and Nea Smyrni. These events aim to promote environmental awareness and sustainable tourism practices.
Greece has consistently ranked second among 52 participating countries since 2025, with 657 total awards. Regions like Halkidiki have remained leaders, with numerous awarded beaches, particularly in Sithonia and the Municipality of Aristotelis, demonstrating Greece’s dedication to excellence in coastal management.
