Early Summer Warmth Grips Greece

The summer holiday season for tourists in Greece has officially commenced, bringing with it an intense wave of heat. According to satellite measurements recorded on June 5, 2026, sea temperatures in many coastal areas have already surpassed the comfortable 20°C threshold. In most popular destinations, the water hovers around 23°C, offering ideal conditions for swimming and relaxation. As travelers prepare for their departures, meteorological models indicate that this summer is shaping up to be one of the warmest on record, with a clear trend of rising air and water temperatures throughout June.

Currently, the warmest waters are found near Koronisi, a small island in northwestern Greece, where temperatures have hit a staggering 24°C. Other regions are reporting similarly high figures, setting the stage for a busy season.

Thessaloniki and Halkidiki: Rising Heat

In the Thessaloniki region, coastal towns such as Stavros, Vrasna, Perea, and Asprovaltis are recording stable values that are already approaching or exceeding records from previous years. In Thessaloniki and Kalamaria, the sea temperature stands at 23.3°C, while the peak daily air temperature has reached 26°C. Kerasia Beach reports similar water temperatures with air highs of 24°C, though expectations are for a steady climb as average June sea temperatures typically reach 24.3°C.

On the Chalkidiki peninsula, specifically the first and second fingers, towns like Hanioti, Kalitea, Polychrono, and Pefkochori are already enjoying full summer conditions. In Neos Marmaras, Sarti, and Nikiti, sea temperatures average 23°C. Air temperatures currently sit between 26°C and 27°C but are forecast to exceed 30°C by the end of June. Due to high UV indices, the perceived heat is often several degrees higher than the actual measurement.

Olympia and Ionian Coast: Peak Season Conditions

The Olympic region, a favorite among Serbian tourists, is seeing rapid warming. In Paralía, Leptokarya, Nea Pori, Platamon, and Olympic Beach, the sea has reached a comfortable 23°C. Leptokarya is currently experiencing air temperatures of 28°C, but models predict the air will regularly exceed 33°C in the second half of June.

The Ionian coast is also heating up early. In Parga, the sea is 22.8°C with air temperatures hitting 29°C. Forecasts suggest air temperatures will reach 30°C or more by month's end, with the "feels like" temperature potentially soaring to 37°C. Lefkada is reporting similar trends, with sea temperatures stabilizing around 22°C to 23°C, making the Ionian islands a prime destination for early summer travelers.
