From Street Vending to Global Stardom

Giannis Antetokounmpo has shared a deeply personal reflection on his journey from the bustling streets of Athens to the pinnacle of global sports and luxury branding. The NBA superstar recently opened up about his early years, revealing that as a teenager, he sold watches and sunglasses on the pavement to help support his family. Today, that same item of commerce has become a symbol of his success through a high-profile partnership with Swiss luxury watchmaker Breitling.

Speaking to Italy's Gazzetta dello Sport, Antetokounmpo discussed the full arc of his life, touching on fatherhood, the upcoming Disney film based on his family's story, and the enduring lessons that guide him both on and off the court. The narrative is one of profound transformation, rooted in the sacrifices of his parents who fled Nigeria for a better life in Greece.

Fatherhood and Family Sacrifice

The Milwaukee Bucks star emphasized that his children are now old enough to understand the hardships their grandparents endured. "My kids haven't actually seen it yet. They were very young when it came out," he said regarding the biographical film. "It's a powerful story about my parents leaving Nigeria, leaving behind their family and everything familiar, to come to Greece in search of a better life. They made enormous sacrifices so I could have the opportunities I have today. They are the real heroes."

Reflecting on the loss of his father, Charles, in 2017, Antetokounmpo spoke with emotion about the man who kept the family united. "My father was the protector and the visionary of our family," he recalled. "He came to Greece from Nigeria and worked on the streets. There were days when he wouldn't eat so that we could. He taught us the importance of staying united."

He noted that he hopes to instill those same values in his own children. "I want them to follow what they love, and I will always be there for them," he added.

A Symbolic Partnership

Perhaps the most poignant aspect of Antetokounmpo's story is his collaboration with Breitling. After five years of working with the brand, the two-time NBA MVP launched his own signature watch line. He sees the partnership as more than a commercial deal; it is a testament to his journey. "I've been working with Breitling for five years and we share the same values and vision," he said. "It's an honour. But what makes it even more incredible is where I came from."

Antetokounmpo recalled stopping his street vending at age 16. "As a child, I sold sunglasses and watches on the streets of Athens. Everything my parents taught me — discipline, hard work and giving my all — stayed with me. Now, years later, I have my own watch and represent one of the biggest companies in the industry. It's crazy when I think about it."

His story remains a powerful reminder of perseverance, moving from the informal economy of Greek streets to representing one of the world's most prestigious luxury brands.
