Georgi Markov has become the first Bulgarian semi-finalist at the European Wrestling Championships for boys and girls up to 17 years old in Samokov. Markov, the grandson of Olympic champion Georgi Markov, defeated two opponents en route to the semi-finals, while Tsvetan Nikолов has a chance to compete in the repechage.
Markov began his tournament in the 60 kg classical style category with a 6-4 win over Armenian Samvel Tonoyan. He followed this with a 10-2 victory over Russian Mikhail Stepnov. He will now face Ukrainian Artiom Zhelobkov in the semi-finals.
The semi-finals at Samokov Arena will begin at 5 PM Bulgarian time, with the medal matches scheduled for tomorrow after 6 PM.
Tsvetan Nikолов still has a chance to compete in the repechage, as his opponent Ali Djavadli (Azerbaijan) has qualified for the semi-finals. Danimir Jordanov (51 kg), Velizar Stoyanov (71 kg), and Nikola Lazarov (92 kg) were all eliminated.
This is a huge moment for Bulgarian wrestling! Can Georgi Markov continue his family's legacy and bring home a medal? Let's hope the semifinals are just as exciting!
