Galatasaray’s Uruguayan midfielder Lucas Torreira was the victim of a violent punch attack in Istanbul's Beyoğlu district. The 32-year-old suspect, Yusuf Yıldırım, fled the scene in a taxi but was quickly apprehended by police. Yıldırım had previously made numerous threats against Torreira and his girlfriend, İpek B., as well as Torreira's ex-girlfriend, Devrim Özkan. Yıldırım’s social media posts, which included chilling threats such as “It is my natural right to kill him. I will return to the country and hire a triggerman,” were included in the investigation files. Torreira sustained a bruise above his left eyebrow, and it was revealed that Yıldırım had previously been subject to a 45-day restraining order.

The attack occurred at 6:45 PM on May 12th in front of Godiva Cafe, located in the Rixos Tersane Istanbul on Taşkızak Tersanesi Street. Yıldırım, who was following Torreira’s movements on social media, approached the Uruguayan star and struck him with a punch at the entrance steps. Torreira’s 39-year-old chauffeur, Eray Saylan, intervened to protect the player. Yıldırım was apprehended shortly after attempting to escape in a taxi.

Torreira, in his statement to the police, refuted the suspect’s claims, emphasizing that İpek B. was his girlfriend. He also mentioned that he had previously obtained a restraining order against Yıldırım. The investigation revealed that Yıldırım had made multiple threatening messages towards Torreira and his circle on social media.

Yusuf Yıldırım was ultimately arrested and taken to the police station. The investigation highlighted his planful nature, and it was noted that he might pose a threat if released. Torreira was taken to the hospital where doctors noted bruising above his left eyebrow and on his forehead.

This shocking attack has raised serious concerns about player safety and the mental health of fans who might resort to such extreme actions. What can be done to protect players from such violent incidents?
