Bulgarian wrestler Georgi Markov has advanced to the final of the European Cadet Wrestling Championship in Samokov after successfully navigating the semifinals. His victory ensures that Bulgaria will claim its first medal at the tournament. Markov could be joined by teammate Tsvelan Nikолов, who has been relegated to the repechage matches set to begin tomorrow.
Markov started the tournament in the 60 kg category with a 6-4 victory over Armenian opponent Samvel Toneyan. He then dominated Russian competitor Mikhail Stepanov with a technical superiority in just 43 seconds. In the semifinals, Markov overcame Ukrainian wrestler Artyom Zhelobkov with a score of 8-0, not using all four minutes of the bout.
The Bulgarian will face German wrestler Christian Liebzeit in the final, which is scheduled for 6 PM Bulgarian time tomorrow.
Nikолов lost to Azerbaijani wrestler Ali Djavadli in the qualifying round at 45 kg but Djavadli went on to defeat Armenian Vazgen Vardanyan and Georgian Luca Bolkvadze, securing a place in the final. This relegated Nikолов to the repechage to face Vardanyan in the afternoon session of the tournament tomorrow.
Danimir Yordanov (51 kg), Velizar Stoyanov (71 kg), and Nikola Lazarov (92 kg) were eliminated from the competition. Markov and Nikолов are the last Bulgarian wrestlers remaining in the classical style category. Tomorrow, the female wrestlers will begin their qualifiers. Competing on the "Arena Samokov" mat will be Kristin Ilina (43 kg), Ekaterina Boyadjieva (49 kg), Stefana Lazarova (57 kg), Boriana Borisova (65 kg), and Tanya Ivanova (73 kg).
This is an incredible moment for Bulgarian wrestling! If Georgi Markov wins, it will be a historic victory. But don't forget about Tsvelan Nikолов and the girls—they're all in it to win it. Who do you think will come out on top?
