AEK has clinched the Greek championship for the 2025/26 season with a dramatic 2:1 victory over Panathinaikos, thanks to a goal in added time. The "Yellow-Blacks" now have an unassailable eight-point lead over their closest rivals PAOK and Olympiacos with just two games remaining. Bulgarian defender Martin Georgiev, who has played sparingly this season, will celebrate his first league title despite only appearing in a couple of matches. He did not feature in today's crucial encounter.
AEK took the lead late in the first half, but Barnabash Varga's goal was disallowed for a foul. Instead, Panathinaikos took the lead in the 62nd minute through a shot by Andrius Tete.
The hosts responded quickly, equalizing in the 72nd minute with a precise strike by Zini. The winning goal for AEK came in the 93rd minute, scored by João Mário, sealing the championship for his team.
AEK's championship victory was also helped by the draw between PAOK and Olympiacos, which ended 1-1. Cyril Despodov did not participate in the match, as he recently underwent surgery.
With this victory, AEK tops the league with 70 points. PAOK and Olympiacos are tied for second place with 62 points each, and Panathinaikos remains in fourth with 51 points.
AEK's late goal was the perfect way to seal the Greek title. It's amazing to see Martin Georgiev get his first championship ring after playing so little. But hey, that's the beauty of team sports! Do you think AEK deserved this title more than PAOK or Olympiacos?
