The Uncapped Sensations

Hold onto your hats, because the Socceroos have thrown the rulebook out the window! Livingston striker Tete Yengi and former Italy Under-21 winger Cristian Volpato have been named in Australia's 26-man squad for the World Cup. Yes, you heard that right. These two uncapped rookies are cutting it close with Tony Popovic's pre-tournament training camp, but they've earned their stripes.

Yengi, the 25-year-old sensation, caught the coach's eye after scoring six goals in 22 appearances for Japanese club Machida Zelvia. His side finished third in Japan's East Region and reached the final of the Asian Champions League. That’s the kind of form that demands attention. Meanwhile, Sassuolo’s 22-year-old Volpato saw his switch ratified by Fifa on Friday, adding European flair to the mix.

Veterans vs. The Cut

But not everyone makes the cut. Hibernian forward Martin Boyle, a 41-time capped veteran, is left on the bench. It’s a tough break for the experienced striker. Meanwhile, former Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Mat Ryan, now of Levante, and Melbourne City striker Mathew Leckie are poised to equal the national record by being selected for a fourth World Cup. That’s legacy talk.

Former Dundee United left-back Aziz Behich and former Hull City midfielder Jackson Irvine are on track for their third tournament. Heart of Midlothian midfielder Cammy Devlin and Aberdeen-born Leicester City centre-half Harry Souttar are among those chosen for their second. Also included are Swansea City centre-half Cameron Burgess, Watford winger Nestory Irankunda, and Norwich City striker Mohamed Toure.

Final Whistle Approaches

Popovic said: "Some difficult decisions had to be made – that's the nature of major tournaments. But it's also a credit to all the players involved over the past few weeks who worked extremely hard during an extended and challenging pre-camp."

Former Hearts defender Kye Rowles, now with DC United, had also been added late to the training squad but did not make the final selection. Australia face Switzerland in their final pre-tournament friendly on Saturday before opening their finals campaign against Turkey on 14 June. The stage is set. The drama is real. Who will rise?
