A Tournament of Contrasts and Firsts
As anticipation builds for the upcoming World Cup across United States, Canada, and Mexico, memories inevitably drift back to the 1994 edition held in America. That tournament was a product of its time, shaped by geopolitical shifts and sporting drama. Yugoslavia was absent due to sanctions amidst ongoing conflict, just as Czechoslovakia had dissolved peacefully in 1992, failing to qualify as a unified entity.
The competition featured only 24 teams, half the size of modern tournaments. Germany entered as defending champions, fielding a unified squad for the first time since the fall of the Berlin Wall. It was a World Cup where American fans learned the nuances of football, where legends faded, and where new records were etched into history.
Baggio’s Miss and Brazil’s Tribute
No image defines the 1994 World Cup more than Roberto Baggio’s missed penalty in the final. The Italian number 10, then the world’s best player, stepped up with the fate of his nation on his shoulders. Facing Brazilian goalkeeper Claudio Taffarel, Baggio struck the ball over the crossbar, handing Brazil their fourth title.
The match ended 0-0 after extra time, the first World Cup final to lack a goal. Brazil dedicated their victory to Ayrton Senna, the Formula 1 legend who died shortly before the tournament began. Since 1994, only two other World Cups, in 2006 and 2022, have been decided by penalty shootouts.
Bulgaria’s Miracle and Maradona’s Exit
Bulgaria emerged as the tournament’s giant-killers, reaching the semi-finals. Led by Golden Ball winner Hristo Stoichkov, they defeated Argentina, Germany, and Mexico before falling to Italy. Stoichkov and Russia’s Oleg Salenko shared the top scorer title with six goals each.
Sweden also surprised many, beating Romania in the quarter-finals and finishing fourth. Meanwhile, Cameroon’s Roger Milla, at 42 years old, became the oldest goalscorer in World Cup history, a record that still stands. The tournament also marked the end of an era for Diego Maradona, who was banned for doping, leaving a legacy of brilliance tarnished by controversy.
bađo taj penal i dalje boli svima. stvarno ne mogu da verujem kako je to moglo da se završi tako. brazilci su zaslužili ali ipak...
