Victor Wembanyama's stellar performance helped the San Antonio Spurs secure a 122-115 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first game of the Western Conference Finals, which went to double overtime on Monday night. Wembanyama was the standout player, scoring 41 points and grabbing 24 rebounds, leading the Spurs to their first win in the series.
The Spurs' win marked the Thunder's first loss of the postseason, as they had previously swept the Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers. Dylan Harper contributed significantly with 24 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, and seven steals.
"We as a team are ready to go into any environment, in any place, against anybody," Wembanyama said post-game. "And even though we've still got a lot to learn, our effort should be over anybody else's. And tonight, we were relentless."
Wembanyama's 41-point, 24-rebound playoff game is one of the rare performances in NBA history, accomplished only by a handful of legends like Wilt Chamberlain, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
"The best player in the world," Spurs guard Stephon Castle announced in a post-game interview on NBC. "He's competitive. If you're a competitor and you see another competitor get rewarded with what you want. If that's motivation, we all get motivated by different things," said Spurs coach Mitch Johnson.
The Spurs led at halftime 51-44 but were outscored by seven points in the second half, leading to a tied regulation score of 101. In double overtime, Wembanyama scored nine points, including a crucial turnaround jumper that sealed the win for the Spurs with 11.5 seconds remaining.
The Spurs outperformed the Thunder in free throws (27 to 16) and rebounds (61 to 40). Thunder coach Mark Daigneault acknowledged the challenge posed by Wembanyama, stating, "When you play against those players, it's kind of an acquired thing."
Asked if he considered himself the best player, Wembanyama modestly replied, "The world is eight billion people. That's eight billion opinions."
Alex Caruso led the Thunder with 31 points, while Jalen Williams added 26 points and seven rebounds. The series continues on Wednesday in Oklahoma City.
