Markov and Manukyan Survive Thriller to Reach Final
Viktor Viktor Markov has secured his place in the doubles final at the $15,000 ITF hard-court tournament in Kayseri, Turkey. The 21-year-old Bulgarian partnered with Russia's Vardan Manukyan, and the third-seeded duo overcame a tense semifinal match to advance. They faced the tournament's top seeds, Britain's Stefan Cooper and France's Victor Paganetti, in a contest that tested their endurance and resolve.
The match lasted one hour and 21 minutes, culminating in a dramatic deciding set. Markov and Manukyan took a 9-7 lead in the championship tiebreak, only to see Cooper and Paganetti fight back to 9-10. However, the Bulgarian-Russian pair held their nerve, winning the next three points to claim a 4-6, 6-3, 12-10 victory. This result marked their second win of the day, following a comprehensive 6-2, 6-2 quarterfinal defeat of Belarus' Ruslan Kastsiukevich and Russia's Vladimir Osminkin.
A Potential All-Bulgarian Final in Kayseri
Despite this deep run, Markov remains without a doubles title on the ITF circuit. The final will be a significant opportunity for him to break that duck. Adding extra national interest to the event, an entirely Bulgarian final is mathematically possible. Fellow countryman Dinko Dinko Dinev is also progressing through the draw.
Dinev, paired with China's E Xunyu and seeded fourth, must defeat the local Turkish pair of Arda Azkara and Haydar Cem Gokpynar to reach the championship match. Their semifinal clash is scheduled for tomorrow. If Dinev and Xunyu win, they will face Markov and Manukyan in a historic all-Bulgarian final, showcasing the depth of talent in Bulgarian junior tennis on the international stage.
