Visa Veto: The US Draws a Line
The drama surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup has escalated beyond the pitch. The United States has officially denied entry visas to a significant portion of the Iranian national team's technical and administrative delegation. While the 26-player squad has received the green light to compete, the backbone of their support structure—medical staff, analysts, and key executives—has been barred from crossing the border. This decision casts a long shadow over what was already a tense diplomatic backdrop for the tournament co-hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico.
Leadership Blocked, Logistics Shifted
Among those denied entry are high-profile figures including team manager Mehdi Mohamadnabi and the general secretary of the Football Federation of Iran, Hedajat Mombeini. Even FA president Mehdi Tadj found his visa application rejected, despite earlier warnings that such restrictions could derail Iran's participation. Reports indicate that more than a dozen delegation members have faced this hurdle, raising serious concerns about the team's preparation. In response, the entire support staff will now accompany the squad to Tijuana, Mexico, as they attempt to secure alternative visa solutions. Iran had initially planned to base themselves in Tucson, Arizona, but shifted operations to Tijuana to minimize time spent in the US.
Fair Play Demands and Upcoming Fixtures
FIFA President Gianni Infantino and other officials have held closed-door meetings with Iranian authorities to prevent what some call a major diplomatic crisis. Iranian officials insist that host nations must guarantee equal treatment for all qualified teams under the principle of fair play. "We qualified for the World Cup and must be provided with the best facilities," Tadj stated. Iran is scheduled to play all three group stage matches on the US West Coast, starting against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15, followed by Belgium in Los Angeles and Egypt in Seattle.
