3D printed copies, virtually identical to the originals, and digital animations accessible via QR codes have been drawing thousands of visitors to a mobile exhibition featuring artifacts from the ancient city of Heraclea Sintica. This exhibition has been enhancing the reputation not only of Petrich but also of Bulgaria as a country rich in cultural heritage, successfully integrated into cultural tourism and economic development.
Systematic Annual Excavations Yielding Long-Term Results
The systematic annual excavations led by Prof. Lyudmil Vagalinski have been yielding long-term results. Each year, the team uncovers new and intriguing artifacts and stories from the mysterious city near the Rupes. Good management of this resource and the cultural policies of the Petrich municipality contribute to adding value to the city, region, and country.
Two years after its reopening following a major restoration project, Heraclea Sintica is setting an example of good practices and effective management of archaeological sites. The increasing number of visitors, positive feedback, and growing interest indicate that Petrich has found the right path for the development of the site.
Mobilizing Cultural Heritage Across Europe
The municipality and the historical museum in Petrich have been showcasing the most interesting artifacts from Heraclea Sintica in a mobile exhibition across Europe, presenting them in an interactive and modern way. The exhibition features 3D printed replicas, digital animations, and Braille descriptions for the visually impaired, making it accessible to all.
The exhibition has been presented in Budapest, Bratislava, Dion, Warsaw, and Poznan. Alongside the exhibition, the historical museum in Petrich informs the public about the history of the ancient city and the tourism opportunities in Petrich and the Struma Valley.
The archaeological season for 2026 is set to begin in early May, with significant expectations as a substantial budget of over €550,000 has been allocated for research. The team will focus on exploring the temple of Heracles, uncovering public buildings with mosaic floors, and revealing the entire forum of the city and the large channel beneath it. These activities will be integrated into the second major project for the permanent conservation of the site, which the Petrich municipality secured at the end of 2025. The project includes digitalization activities and socialization measures like expanding parking and providing new services for visitors. The total funding for the project is €4.4 million, with implementation set for completion by 12/2029.
The two marble statues are currently on display at the Historical Museum of Petrich, one of the newest in Bulgaria, which complements the main exhibition with the most valuable artifacts from the 2025 archaeological season. The museum is also notable for its overall vision, museology, and development concept.
не можах да си представя колко много хора ще се интересуват от археологията в Петрич. няма съмнение, че това е правилният начин за развитие.
