Unforeseen Final in Geneva
Mariano Navenne reached his fourth ATP Tour final at the Geneva tournament, where he stunned three-time champion Casper Ruud with a 7-5, 6-2 victory. Navenne turned his first-round match against Marco Trungelliti around after trailing 5-7, 1-5, and then built on this win with straight-set victories over Cameron Norrie, Jaume Munar, and Ruud at the ATP 250 clay-court event.
"I am truly happy at the moment," Navenne said. "The first set was very difficult. He has been playing very well lately and is returning to the top 20. This is a big result for me and my second clay-court final in this period."
Aggressive from the backhand, Navenne was impressive against the Norwegian, consistently directing the ball along the straight lines to complicate Ruud's play. The Argentine recorded 27 winners, including a match-winning backhand at match point, advancing after 1 hour and 42 minutes.
Navenne's Progress
Navenne is chasing his second ATP title, having won in Bucharest in April. The 25-year-old tennis player climbs five spots to No. 37 in the virtual ranking and will face Lorne Tien in the final on Saturday.
Ruud reached the final of the Masters series tournament in Rome last week, and then recorded victories against Jensen Brooksby, Rafael Colijn, and Alexei Popyrin in Geneva, where he lifted the trophy in 2021, 2022, and 2024. The two-time Roland Garros finalist is now heading to Paris.
Tien Advances to Final
Seeded fourth, Tien defeated second-seeded Alexander Bublik 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(5) to reach his third ATP final and his first on clay. In a dramatic finish, Tien lost four match points at 6-1 in the tiebreaker of the third set. Ultimately, however, the left-hander closed out the match on his fifth opportunity, showcasing incredible defense against Bublik's serve. Tien fought along the baseline to stay in the rally, sprinting towards a short ball and eventually forcing Bublik to miss.
"I cannot believe the match ended," Tien said. "I was sure I would lose that point. I knew the direction, had a little luck, and am truly happy to have moved forward."
The 20-year-old Tien is the youngest finalist in Geneva since Sergi Bruguera, who was 19 in 1990, and the second American finalist in the ATP 250 tournament since Aaron Krickstein in 1984. Tien will seek his second ATP title following his triumph in Metz last year.
Tien, who defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in his first match in Geneva, has six ATP wins on clay this year. Last week in Rome, the world No. 20 reached the quarterfinals.
