A Sacred Relic Through Turbulent Times

The Serbian Orthodox Church solemnly commemorates the Third Finding of the holy head of John the Baptist, one of the most significant events in the veneration of the Lord's greatest prophet and forerunner. After centuries of suffering, concealment, and transfer through the turbulent history of the Church, the sacred head was rediscovered and ceremoniously moved to Constantinople in 850 AD, where it was placed in the imperial church for the faithful to venerate.

St John the Baptist suffered martyrdom by order of King Herod, spurred by the malicious counsel of Herodias. Following his execution, Herodias forbade the burial of his head with his body, fearing the spiritual power and holiness of the prophet whose words had shaken the conscience of the era's rulers. She ordered the head hidden in an unknown location.

From Jerusalem to Constantinople

However, Joanna, the wife of Chuza, a court official of Herod, secretly took the holy head and buried it with dignity on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. Over the centuries, the relic was found and hidden multiple times due to persecutions and unrest.

In the 8th century, during the period of iconoclasm, the holy head was transferred to Komane in Cappadocia, a city also known as the resting place of St John Chrysostom. When the Church triumphed over iconoclasm, during the reign of Emperor Michael III and Patriarch Ignatius, the relic was solemnly transferred to Constantinople. This event is remembered as the Third Finding of the head of St John the Baptist.

A Beacon of Faith

The veneration of this great relic has gathered the faithful around the figure of St John for centuries, the prophet who baptized the Lord Jesus Christ and called people to repentance. His suffering, and the miraculous preservation of his relics, testify that truth and faith cannot be hidden or destroyed.

The Third Finding of the head of St John the Baptist remains a lasting reminder that God glorifies His servants, and that their sacrifice and faithfulness remain a beacon for all generations seeking the path of truth, justice, and salvation.
