Probation Broken, Career Frozen

The trouble stems from Rozier’s pretrial release conditions. He pleaded not guilty to an investigation involving illegal sports betting, but his actions violated the strict terms of his freedom. He was barred from contacting members of the Miami Heat and the Charlotte Hornets, yet he crossed those lines. This breach meant he could not fulfill his professional obligations to play. His attorney, Jim Trusty, argued in a recent filing that this inability to play constitutes a "failure to perform contractual duties," effectively wiping out any chance of retaining his salary.

Accusations of Bribery

The legal stakes are incredibly high. Federal prosecutors allege Rozier was part of a vast betting scheme. The indictment includes charges of bribery, accusing him of soliciting and receiving $100,000 in exchange for providing inside information to a group of bettors. Additional charges include electronic services fraud. The NBA placed him on unpaid administrative leave in November 2025, and the Heat finalized his waiver this spring. In a twist of irony, Miami received a 2026 second-round draft pick from his former team to settle a dispute over the concealment of the investigation during his transfer.

A Career in Limbo

Rozier, who has played for the Boston Celtics, Charlotte Hornets, and Miami Heat, posted solid numbers across 665 career games. But now, the tentation of extra gains has led to a dead end. His lawyer announced that new indictments are coming, and Rozier will plead not guilty again. As of next month, he becomes a free agent, but with a cloud of federal charges hanging over his head, the path back to the hardwood looks nearly impossible.
