Tennis World Mourns: 4-Time Grand Slam Champion Mal Anderson Passes Away

The legendary Australian tennis player and US Open champion Mal Anderson passed away at the age of 91, according to the Australian Tennis Association.

Anderson will be remembered in the history books as the first unseeded player to win the US Open singles title. This historic victory occurred in 1957. On his way to the championship, he defeated three favorites, losing only two sets throughout the entire tournament.

Anderson also won three Grand Slam titles in mixed doubles and twice triumphed with the national team in the Davis Cup.

After retiring from competitive tennis, Mal Anderson remained in the sport, sharing his experience with young players. He worked with the renowned Pat Rafter.

"The news of Mal's passing has deeply saddened me. He was one of the people who shaped my tennis from the very beginning. He was a true legend of the game, but more importantly, he was a wonderful person – humble, generous, and always ready to help younger players. Australian tennis has lost one of its giants, and many of us have lost a friend and mentor," said a former world number one and US Open champion.

The Australian Tennis Association highlighted that Mal Anderson will be remembered not only for his success on the court but also for his significant contributions to developing new champions.
