Belgrade has recently witnessed three unusual incidents involving bee swarms, leaving citizens in a state of shock. One incident occurred in Novi Beograd, where a portion of a bee swarm landed on a tree branch and the ground. Another incident took place on Voždovac when a bee swarm literally entered a parked car. Most recently, a swarm descended upon a woman on a bus stop in Zvezdara, causing her to panic. Many are questioning the sudden appearance of bees in the city and how to react if they encounter them.
A Swarm on the Branch and Ground in Novi Beograd
The first incident was reported in Novi Beograd, where part of a bee swarm settled on a tree branch near a sidewalk, while the rest landed on the ground beneath it. This location sees a high volume of pedestrian traffic daily.
Bee Swarm Enters a Parked Car on Voždovac
In a more extreme incident, a bee swarm entered a parked car on Voždovac, where the windows were open. The sight was truly frightening and initially thought to be a product of artificial intelligence, but the footage is indeed real.
Bee Swarm Panic at the Bus Stop
A woman in Zvezdara described her encounter with a swarm of bees at a bus stop, saying she was terrified. She estimated there were at least 300 bees.
Swarming Season: May and June
According to Dr. Jovana Bila Dubaić, an associate professor of ecology, biogeography, and environmental protection at Belgrade University's Faculty of Biology, swarming is a natural part of the life cycle of honey bees and typically occurs during May and June. This process signifies a strong bee colony deciding to split and find a new home.
Favored Locations for Bee Swarms
Dr. Jovana explains that bee swarms often settle in unusual places in the city when something interrupts their natural course. This was the case at the Second Economic School on Voždovac, where a swarm settled in the internal walls of the courtyard, necessitating the intervention of beekeepers.
This swarm invasion is wild! The bees are taking over Belgrade like they're reclaiming their kingdom. Are the city's residents ready for more encounters with these buzzing visitors? #BeeSwarmBelgrade
