A Medal Match That Went Down to the Wire

The atmosphere inside the Palace of Culture and Sports in Varna was electric as Stilyana Nikolova delivered a performance that screamed championship pedigree. The Bulgarian rhythmic gymnast secured a hard-fought silver medal in the ball final at the European Championships, a result that underscores the razor-thin margins at the elite level. Nikolova executed a composition of immense difficulty and precision, earning a total score of 29.550 points. Her breakdown was formidable: 13.4 for difficulty, 8.050 for execution, and 8.100 for artistry.

Yet, in rhythmic gymnastics, a fraction of a point can separate glory from heartbreak. The gold medal went to Germany's Darya Varfolomeeva, an Olympic and two-time World Champion who matched Nikolova’s exact total score of 29.550 and identical execution mark. The tiebreaker came down to artistry, where Varfolomeeva edged ahead, claiming the top spot. Russia’s Sofia Ilteryakova completed the podium with a bronze, finishing third with 28.850 points.

Bulgaria’s Medal Haul and Future Contenders

This silver marks Nikolova’s third individual or team honor at the Varna championships, following her team gold and all-around silver. It is a testament to her consistency on home soil. Meanwhile, her teammate Eva Brezalieva faced a tougher outing, making critical errors including stepping out of bounds, which landed her in eighth place with 21.250 points after deductions.

In the earlier hoop final, both Bulgarian gymnasts missed the podium. Brezalieva finished seventh with 26.550, while Nikolova placed eighth with 26.500. The hoop title went to Sofia Ilteryakova with 29.900, ahead of Belarus’ Alina Karnasko and Italy’s Sofia Raffaeli.

The competition is far from over. Nikolova and Brezalieva are set to compete in the clubs and ribbon finals later today, with Bulgaria also entering the team apparatus final with five balls. To date, Bulgaria has accumulated six medals: three golds (women’s team, junior team, and Siyana Alekova’s hoop) and three silvers (Nikolova’s all-around and ball, and Dea Emilova’s junior clubs).
