A New Stage in Kosice
The wait is over. The Serbian track and field star Ivana Spanovic is finally stepping onto the track. After a frustrating postponement, the long jump champion will kick off her outdoor season this Wednesday at the international meet in Kosice. But this isn't just another warm-up. This is a test of adaptability, a display of raw talent on a makeshift stage. The competition takes place on a square, featuring a unique wooden board surface. It’s a setup reserved exclusively for long jumpers and triple jumpers of both genders. Trainer Goran Obradovic has set the scene, and the world is watching.
Adversity Strikes in Savona
Plans were different. The summer premiere was supposed to happen last Wednesday in the Italian town of Savona. But the body has its own agenda. Two days before departure, a sudden cramp seized Spanovic’s quadriceps during toning exercises. Caution prevailed. The team decided against the trip. Once it became clear the injury was minor, they pivoted. Kosice became the new destination. No excuses, just adjustments. This is the mindset of a champion.
The Triple Jump Gambit
Here is the twist. Spanovic is shifting focus to the triple jump, a discipline she prioritized last season. To manage her preparation, she is using a shorter approach run. Starting from just 10 steps, she aims to replicate her best short-approach jump of 13.80 meters. It’s a calculated risk. Her full approach consists of 16 steps, which she utilized during the indoor World Championships in Torun, Poland, where she secured sixth place with a leap of 14.35 meters. Now, she must conquer the event with fewer strides. Currently ranked 10th in the triple jump, this performance could open doors to major competitions. Next stop: the Diamond League meet in Oslo on June 10. The clock is ticking.
