On Thursday, May 21, 2026, the South African Football Federation released the preliminary list of players for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be held in the USA, Mexico, and Canada. Notably absent from the list was Siyabonga Ngezana, the 28-year-old defender from FCSB.

Hugo Broos, the 74-year-old Belgian coach, confirmed that Ngezana will not be included in the final 24-man squad that will travel to the World Cup, which begins on June 11.

Ngezana's Struggles

Despite his hopes, Ngezona has struggled this season, playing just six matches for both his club and national team. Since February, he has only participated in two matches, both for FCSB. In one match against Farul Constanta on April 20, he came on as a substitute for the last 13 minutes. In the other match against FC Hermannstadt on May 18, he played the full game.

Negative Reception

The news of Ngezana’s omission was not a surprise to many in South Africa. Broos’ initial list for the preliminary squad was made available to the South African Football Association (SAFA) on May 21, and Ngezana’s name was notably absent. The final squad of 24 players will be announced at the Presidential Guest House Sefako Makgatho in Pretoria on May 27.

Ngezana expressed his disappointment in an interview, clarifying a misunderstanding with his coach about his selection for the World Cup. He explained that his club had not received the correct information from the coach, leading to confusion about his inclusion in the squad.
