The small town club Elversberg has made history by qualifying for the Bundesliga for the first time. After finishing second in the second division this season, Elversberg secured their promotion with a 3-0 victory over Preussen Muenster in the final round.
In the 11th minute, Conte gave Elversberg the lead, followed by Mokwa scoring in the 14th minute to make it 2-0. Mokwa also scored the final goal, sealing the 3-0 win. The goals can be viewed HERE.
Interestingly, the club is from the town of Spiesen-Elversberg, which has only 13,000 inhabitants. Elversberg is the fourth club from Saarland to reach the top tier of German football. Prior to the final round, three teams—Elversberg, Paderborn, and Hannover 96—were tied on 59 points, but Elversberg had a better goal difference.
Elversberg will join Schalke 04 in the Bundesliga. Schalke secured their return to the top tier much earlier, finishing first in the second division with 70 points. Paderborn secured the third qualifying spot with a 2-0 win over Darmstadt, while Hannover ended up in fourth place after a 3-3 draw with Nuremberg.
After the final round in the first division on Saturday, Sankt Pauli and Heidenheim were relegated, while Wolfsburg will face Paderborn in additional qualification matches.
Elversberg will become the 59th club to play in the Bundesliga since its inception in 1963.
