A Practical Alternative to Evzoni Congestion

The summer travel season for Serbian tourists heading to Greece is in full swing. While the Evzoni border crossing remains the primary entry point, it is notorious for multi-hour queues during peak weekends and holidays. For travelers heading to destinations east of Thessaloniki, such as Halkidiki, Kavala, or Thassos, the Stari Dojran-Doirani crossing offers a superior alternative. Located on the shores of Lake Dojran, which is shared by North Macedonia and Greece, this checkpoint is just a few kilometers from the town of Stari Dojran.

In recent years, this route has gained significant popularity. Its main advantage is lower traffic volume. Even during the height of the tourist season, drivers often pass through with minimal waiting time, avoiding the stress associated with the main crossing. The border operates 24 hours a day, providing flexibility for late-night travelers.

Route Options and Road Conditions

Reaching the crossing from Serbia involves traveling through North Macedonia. There are three primary routes available to drivers. The first involves exiting the highway at Smokvica, continuing through Marvinac and Valandovo toward Dojran. This is a common choice due to its simplicity, though some drivers note that road surfaces on certain sections are uneven.

A second, frequently recommended option is exiting at Udovo. Experienced drivers often prefer this path for its smoother ride and scenic views, including a small church on a nearby hill. The third option involves exiting at Devdzhelija (Bogdanci). While this is the longest route and requires additional toll payments, the road is renovated and passes through fewer villages, making it a comfortable drive.

The road itself is a main highway, not a motorway. It passes through populated villages and towns, requiring attention to speed limits and local traffic. Drivers should expect a decent but slower journey compared to highway travel. If your destination is the Olympic region or the Ionian Sea, this route adds approximately 35 kilometers to your trip, as you must merge back onto the main corridor near Polykastro. However, for eastern Greek destinations, the time saved at the border far outweighs the extra distance.
