The Stage Is Set in Belgrade
The world of alpine skiing is trembling. Johan Eliasch, the controversial president of the International Ski Federation (FIS), faces an open rebellion from the sport’s biggest stars and strongest nations. With the presidential election looming on June 11 in Belgrade, the tension is palpable. Legends like Marco Odermatt and Mikaela Shiffrin have publicly turned their backs on Eliasch, citing a lack of transparency and broken promises. "I don’t have anything personal against him, but as FIS president, he hasn’t fulfilled his promises," Odermatt stated. "We need a leader who works for skiing, not for himself."
The Financial Abyss
But it’s not just about promises—it’s about money. When Eliasch took the helm, the FIS coffers held €142 million. Today? A mere €46 million. Where did the cash vanish? Despite claims of reinvestment, prize money hasn’t increased. Diego Züger, co-executive director of the Swiss Ski Association, painted a grim picture: "If we continue like this, we’re heading straight for the wall." The crisis deepened with the sudden, irrevocable resignation of Urs Lehmann, the former Swiss Ski president and FIS executive director. Lehmann warned that under current management, the FIS could face bankruptcy within two years. Eliasch fired back, calling Lehmann a liar who "stabbed him in the back."
A Schism in the Snow
Now, a coalition of giants—Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Italy, Sweden, the USA, Canada, France, and Norway—demands Eliasch’s ouster. Peter Barandun, head of the Swiss Ski Association, called Eliasch an autocrat who denies the financial catastrophe. Yet, Eliasch still holds the votes of many smaller nations. With 80 voting associations, his support base might just be enough to win. If he does, the major nations threaten to break away, creating a rival circuit featuring iconic races like Wengen, Kitzbühel, and Val d'Isère. Will skiing survive this split, or will it fracture forever?
honestly the financials are a mess tbh. 142m to 46m? where did it go lol. if the big nations split that’s gonna be wild
