Polish tennis players Iga Świątek and Naomi Osaka secured convincing victories to advance to the fourth round of the women's tennis tournament in Rome. Świątek defeated Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-1, 6-0 in 65 minutes on Sunday, reaching the fourth round of this tournament for the fifth time in her career. This result is familiar, as the two met in the first round of last year's edition, with Świątek winning with the same score.
Joining the fourth round is world No. 15 Naomi Osaka, who earlier in the day recorded a similarly dominant win over No. 19 Diana Shnaider. Osaka dispatched Shnaider in just 54 minutes, allowing her only three games in a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
These two favorites, who together hold 10 Grand Slam titles, will face each other in the fourth round in the Italian capital. They have not played since 2024 in Stuttgart, with Świątek leading their head-to-head record 2-1.
Despite falling to No. 130 in the WTA rankings, Czech player Karolína Plíšková is showing improved form. She needed only one hour and 18 minutes to advance to the fourth round, defeating No. 46 in the rankings, Laura Siegemund, 6-1, 6-4. Despite her current ranking, Plíšková has been impressive on clay courts this season. Before coming to Rome, she reached consecutive quarterfinals in her last two clay court tournaments, securing notable wins over top 50 players Elise Mertens, Maria Sakkari, and Ekaterina Alexandrova.
Her next opponent, however, is a much tougher challenge: world No. 2 Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan, who earlier today defeated Aleksandra Eala from the Philippines 6-4, 6-3 in 93 minutes.
American Jessica Pegula, on the other hand, recorded her first win in two straight sets of love, beating Rebecca Masarova (Switzerland) 6-0, 6-0, and will face Anastasia Potapova (Austria) in the next round.
