The Serbian handball team demonstrated great heart in a two-game series against Hungary, which was nominally favored. Despite losing the second match 31:30 in Veszprém, the Serbians secured a place in the World Cup finals by winning the first match 31:29 in Niš, giving them a slight edge in the overall score. They will participate in the final tournament beginning in 2027.
Coach Raul Gonzales carefully arranged the team, which performed impressively and avoided the usual dramatic fluctuations characteristic of Serbian handball in recent years. While we celebrated at the end, we hope this is only the beginning.
During the match in Veszprém, where the Icelandic referees displayed a poor criterion, often disadvantaging Serbia, the newly elected Prime Minister of Hungary, Peter Magyar, was present on the tribune.
Magyar posted on Instagram before the match, "Come on, Hungary! Everything is in play!!! Hungary - Serbia, World Cup qualifiers, Veszprém. We need to win by a margin of three goals to qualify for the World Cup," and again after the match.
He was not satisfied with the outcome.
Magyar wrote, "We are approaching the World Cup... Pain. Come on, Hungary! Thank you for the hospitality and the wonderful atmosphere in Veszprém," indicating his team would now hope for a wild card.
What a thrilling series! The Serbians really showed heart in these matches. I can't wait to see how they perform at the World Cup. Will they surprise us or will it be a rough ride? Let's hope for the best!
