Sisak-based football club Segesta, the oldest in Croatia, has secured a place in the SuperSport 1st League with two games left in the season after defeating Solin 2-1 away. Known to the public primarily through midfielder Tonći Kukoč, the club's journey to the top league has been nothing short of remarkable. Kukoč, who has been with the club for over two years, shared his sentiments on the achievement in a post on his Facebook page.
"We did it! Segesta is in the top league. Congratulations to my teammates, the coaching staff, and the club's management. On July 10, when preparations were due to begin, there were only five players in the club. By July 20, we had started our training without any sponsorship and today we have achieved what others thought was impossible."
"An individual can win one or two matches, but a group wins championships. If we tolerate negative energy and players who believe they are bigger than the club, we won't have long-term success. The coach and management did not make a mistake by creating a team where players fight for one another."
Kukoč also expressed his pride in being part of the club and its achievements, stating, "Segesta will return to the pinnacle of Croatian football."
Adapting to Higher Competition
"The transition won't be difficult. There will be more space for play, higher quality, and intensity, but nothing we can't adjust to. The club isn't thinking about staying in this league but attacking the top of Croatian football. Sisak deserves the best."
Future Plans and Ambitions
"In the coming days, I will meet with the management to discuss our future. My goal is to reach the highest level of Croatian football. When will my career end? WHEN DEATH DEEMES IT NECESSARY."
Kukoč emphasized the importance of maintaining the current squad with some reinforcements and praised the club's management and infrastructure development plans.
What a remarkable journey for Segesta! From five players to the top league in just over a year is almost unheard of. Can they keep this momentum and make a mark in the top league? Let’s hope so!
