Scotland's World Cup Squad Announced, 43-Year-Old Keeper Included
Steve Clarke, the coach of the Scottish national team, has announced a 26-man squad for the upcoming World Cup in North America. Among the selected players is 43-year-old goalkeeper Craig Gordon, who missed the European Championships. The other goalkeepers named are Liam Kelly and Angus Gunn. None of the three have played regularly during the last season, amassing only seven matches combined.
Southampton's Ross Stewart, who has not been part of the national team since 2022, is also included in the squad. Nineteen-year-old Findlay Curtis, who made his debut for the national team in March, is among the players selected. The squad also features key players like Andrew Robertson, Kieran Tierney, Scott McTominay, and John McGinn.
However, Lennox Meekers, the half-back from Udinese, was left out of the squad.
The Scottish team will face Haiti (June 14), Morocco (June 19), and Brazil (June 24) in Group C. The first two group stage matches will be played in Massachusetts, while the last match will be in Miami. The team will also play a friendly match against Curacao at Hampden on May 30, followed by a final warm-up game against Bolivia in New Jersey on June 6.
Goalkeepers: Craig Gordon, Angus Gunn, Liam Kelly
Defenders: Grant Hanley, Jack Hendry, Aaron Hickey, Domhnall Henry, Scott McKenna, Nathan Patterson, Anthony Ralston, Andrew Robertson, John Souttar, Kieran Tierney
Midfielders: Ryan Christie, Findlay Curtis, Lewis Ferguson, Ben Gunn-Doak, Billy Gilmour, John McGinn, Kenny McLean, Scott McTominay
Forwards: Che Adams, Lynden Gooch, George Hirst, Lawrence Shankland, Ross Stewart
This squad has some real depth but facing Brazil and Morocco in the group stage is a tough ask. Will they be able to pull off a surprise result? I can't wait to see how they perform!
