Santiago Orduna Bids Farewell to Lube: Magic in the Cup but Regret for Lost Titles
After two years filled with both challenges and inspiration, Santiago Orduna, the Argentine defender with Italian citizenship, is leaving the ranks of Lube Civitanova (Civitanova). Orduna joined the "red-and-whites" in the summer of 2024, following a career that saw him close to moving to the Marche region on several occasions. Attracted by the opportunity to mentor young talents in the squad, the veteran from the Superlega ended up being much more than just a mentor.
In addition to his charisma, "Santi" proved invaluable in complex game situations, combining energy and unwavering physicality with the quality and experience of a veteran. Thanks in part to his contributions, the team secured the Del Monte® Italian Cup for the 2024/25 season. Reaching the final in the Challenge Cup and two consecutive finals for the Scudetto over the last two years, along with two consecutive qualifications for the CEV Champions League, attest to the value of the work done and the right path of development.
Mattia Boninfonte: Thank you to everyone at Lube! It was a pleasure
Santiago Orduna's farewell:
"It was an honor for me to wear the jersey of Lube for two years. At this stage of my career, it was a great pleasure to share my experience with my teammates and try to lead the team as high as possible in Italy and Europe. These were two intense seasons, lived with a positive spirit. I tried to contribute both on and off the field. I leave with regret that we did not complete the work in the championship, given the two lost Scudetto finals, but winning the Italian Cup last year was magical."
"I thank everyone, and I want to mention a few special souls. The club's medical director, Mariano Avio, has always been there for me. The human and professional support of the conditioning coach, Max Meraci, and the physiotherapist, Marco Frontaloni, was also crucial for the team. I have played for many clubs, and it is not easy to find a team so dedicated to interpersonal relationships—I consider this an added value. Of course, I cannot forget the fans, who made me feel at home from day one and continue to show their warmth to me now that I am leaving. The fans from the group Predators were always with us, and I will not forget them, even if we meet again on the other side of the net. Thank you, Lube!"
"Volleyball club A.S. Volley Lube thanks the athlete for providing his experience and talent to the team. The club wishes Santiago to continue to fight with the same energy and leadership spirit."
This farewell is bittersweet for Lube fans. Winning the Cup was a highlight, but those lost Scudetto finals sting. What's next for Orduna? Will he find another team that values his experience as much as Lube did?
