Samuel Eto'o, the President of the Cameroon Football Federation and a legendary footballer, has been banned for six months from all international matches by FIFA's Disciplinary Committee. The ban, which took effect immediately, was announced to Eto'o officially. The ban is a result of Eto'o's aggressive behavior and actions that contravened fair play principles during a match between Cameroon and Brazil in the 20-Year-Old Women's World Cup held in Bogota, Colombia on September 11th, which Brazil won 3-1 in extra time.
Eto'o's Contentious Presidency: New Challenges Ahead
Eto'o, who has been at the center of numerous controversies since becoming the President of the Cameroon Football Federation in 2021, has once again been embroiled in disciplinary issues. Last July, he was fined 200,000 dollars by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for ethical breaches after agreeing to be a spokesperson for betting company 1XBET. CAF's Disciplinary Committee ruled that Eto'o "seriously violated the principles of ethics, integrity, and sportsmanship." His legal team has contested this decision, citing insufficient evidence of match-fixing allegations.
During his career, Eto'o, who played for Barcelona and Chelsea, has been a trailblazer in both European and Cameroonian football. However, his role as the federation president has been marred by controversy. Last year, a group representing amateur clubs in Cameroon called for his resignation due to "serious irregularities." He has also been labeled a "dictator" by a former international teammate for his management style. His disagreement with the Cameroon Sports Ministry over the appointment of Marc Brys as the head coach of the national team, the Indomitable Lions, also made headlines this year.
Eto'o, now 43, will be unable to attend any matches of Cameroon's men's or women's teams across all age groups until the ban is lifted. This includes Cameroon's upcoming match against Kenya in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in October.
Eto'o's disciplinary issues are becoming a recurring theme. How long can he keep his position with so many controversies? It’s time for a change, don’t you think?
