The Samaria Gorge, one of Greece's most iconic natural attractions, is set to officially open for the 2026 season on Tuesday, May 19. The Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (OFYPEKA) has completed all necessary maintenance and safety upgrades to ensure a smooth and safe experience for visitors.

This year, the Samaria National Park will once again utilize a nowcasting application to provide early warnings for severe weather conditions at critical points along the trail. Free helmets will be provided at both entrances, although their use is optional, it is strongly recommended.

Medical and nursing staff will be on-site from the very first day of operation to assist visitors in case of emergency. Visitors are reminded to respect and protect the natural environment, comply with all safety rules, and take personal responsibility for their safety while hiking through the gorge.

Due to the unpredictable nature of the gorge, the Samaria Gorge may be temporarily suspended in the event of adverse weather or other emergency situations, in accordance with the Emergency Response Operational Plan of the Region of Crete.
