Former Rapid coach and player Mircea Rednic (64) has revealed that Daniel Pancu (48) has struck a deal with the white-blue club to take over the technical helm. Despite his affection for Pancu, the experienced coach has warned about the immense pressure at Rapid. According to Rednic, Daniel Pancu has agreed to take over the coaching role at Rapid, even though he helped CFR Cluj qualify for European cups just the day before.
Rednic warned his former pupil about the immense pressure in Giulești, emphasizing that the atmosphere at Rapid is much more tense than in Gruia. “Look at Pancu, he is leaving now. I love him, he is like my child, but he must not forget that in Cluj, they performed under much tougher conditions, won titles, and went to European cups.
Based on my information, he has agreed for Rapid, but at CFR he has a better package. He will need to be careful, select transfers, and the players will have to adapt. It is not easy to play for Rapid, it has a special spirit, like Dinamo, Steaua, or Craiova, there are high expectations. Even the stadium security guard has opinions, and there are influences from the stands, unlike Cluj where there is no such pressure from the supporters,” Rednic said, as reported by Sport Total FM.
Rednic attributes the lack of trophies at Rapid to coaches without authority, who allow executives to intervene excessively in team affairs. He pointed to the transfer of Olimpiu Moruțan as a negative example, which, in his view, disrupted the locker room balance.
“Rapid hasn’t won a title since 2003, when I was in charge. Dinamo is the same, since 2007. It is the coach's fault for allowing the world to come over him, the executives, the managers. Bringing in Moruțan, you destroyed three players. You destroyed Dobre, you destroyed Micovschi, who had to leave, you destroyed Rareș Pop. Moruțan has quality, but for two to three years, they are still searching. You spent a lot of money, you destroyed the locker room, and the result was what was seen. The coach must impose himself,” Rednic added for the mentioned source.
Rednic's got a point about the pressure at Rapid, but do you think Pancu is the right man for the job after his recent success at Cluj? What do you think will happen next?
