Red Star's basketball season ended on a sour note, with the team's ABA league campaign collapsing and the Serbian Superliga left with little significance. Responsibility is being spread around, with player Čima Moneke seemingly pointing fingers at coach Saša Obradović.
Following the ABA league semi-final series against Partizan, where Red Star was defeated 2-0, Čima Moneke spoke to the press, expressing his dissatisfaction with the team's performance.
He highlighted the turning point in the season.
- There wasn't much to it. We played the last game against Olympiacos the way it should have been played. We had a break, and things changed. We went into games not knowing which version of ourselves would show up. We didn't deserve to win at the end of the season. We tried to motivate ourselves, to feel better. From October to Olympiacos, we must talk about it. We fell, incredibly, we were selfish, the ball didn't circulate. There's no explanation; it's what ruined our season.
Moneke was also asked if the blame lies with the coach.
- I think you know what I'm talking about. We didn't know what we were doing in attack or defense. We always played the same way, isolation and just dribbling. You can't play basketball like that. I've been talking about this since December, before the games against Partizan, Maccabi, and Bayern. You can't play like that. In some games, we had the talent to shoot. But even in the game against Bologna, which we won by one point, we were crap. I've been saying we have problems. That...
How do you fix these things?
- It can't be fixed. We don't have an identity. Sometimes we play well, sometimes we play poorly. I don't know. My season is over; I'll try to be the best teammate. I'll try to hold my head high. I apologize to the players again. I feel for them, I'm sorry. At the end, we did some good things. We had some good moments. I don't regret wanting to reach the Final Four; it's my goal. I want to do it here.
Should Red Star fans still believe in the process?
- Absolutely. I love football; I see what's happening with Real Madrid. We've done some good things, with a good direction, with some things we just need to fix a little and take the next step. I want to become better over the summer, to be healthier. I've never missed so many games, some were unlucky, but I want to achieve my dreams here. I want that when I retire, this season will be the one where I say we learned something. I want to say that I helped the team and that I became better here. Everyone is frustrated, but we can achieve great things.
