A River of Faith in the Streets
Belgrade has witnessed an unprecedented display of piety this week as massive queues have formed around the Temple of Saint Sava. Devotees are waiting up to 15 hours to pay homage to the Belt of the Theotokos, a revered Orthodox Christian relic. While the cathedral area remains densely packed, the longest lines appear to be stretching through Nebojšina Street, creating a continuous river of people that seems to have no end.
Journalists walking the length of the queue noted a striking atmosphere of patience and calm. There was no visible tension or frustration among the crowd. Instead, believers stood shoulder to shoulder, moving forward in a steady rhythm, each step bringing them closer to the holy object they had traveled to see. As reporters moved against the flow, they encountered curious but serene faces, with new believers calmly joining the line even as it grew longer.
An Extended Stay for the Sacred Relic
The Belt of the Theotokos arrived in Belgrade on May 20 from the Vatoped Monastery on Mount Athos in Greece. It was originally scheduled to remain in Serbia until May 29. However, due to the overwhelming number of visitors, the stay has been extended twice. The relic will now remain at the Temple of Saint Sava until Saturday, June 6.
On that final day, Patriarch Porfirije will preside over a Divine Liturgy, after which the belt will be ceremoniously returned to Mount Athos. It is believed that hundreds of thousands of faithful have already venerated the relic since its arrival. The procession that brought the belt to the city on May 21, part of the Spasovdan liturgy, drew thousands of participants from the Serbian Orthodox Church and the general public.
A Historical Covenant Renewed
The return of the Belt of the Theotokos to Belgrade marks a significant historical moment. The relic was gifted to the Vatoped Monastery by Serbian ruler Prince Lazar six centuries ago. Its presence in the capital has sparked deep emotional and spiritual resonance across the country.
Patriarch Porfirije emphasized that the sheer number of visitors is less important than the spiritual significance of the event. He stated that the people are confirming their century-old loyalty to the Svetosavlje and the Kosovo Covenant, describing these as the realization of the New Testament in the lives of Orthodox Serbs. The event has become a powerful symbol of national and religious identity, drawing citizens from across the region to witness this rare occurrence.
