Record Broken in "Giro d'Italia" Time Trial
The Giro d'Italia's time trial stage did not produce a new leader in the general classification, but it did see an exciting performance by Filippo Ganna, the discipline specialist for Netcompany Ineos. Ganna covered the 42 km between Viareggio and Massa in 45 minutes and 53 seconds, achieving an average speed of 54.921 km/h. This set a new record for the time trial stage in the Grand Tours, which is over 40 km long. The previous record was held by David Millar (USA) at 45.53 km/h in 2003.
In the stage, Timon Smit, Ganna's Dutch teammate, came in second, 1 minute and 54 seconds behind Ganna. Afonso Almeida of Bahrain-Victorious, still leading the overall race, finished in 41st place. Jonas Vingegaard, the favorite, secured 13th place, 3 minutes behind Ganna, and reduced his deficit to Almeida by 27 seconds.
Tomorrow's stage will cover 195 km from Porcari to Chiavari.
Ganna's performance was unbelievable, but can he maintain this pace for the rest of the Giro? The competition is heating up, and the race is far from over!
