Anamaria Prodan, a prominent sports journalist, has expressed skepticism about Gigi Becali's claim that Marius Baciu, the newly appointed coach of FC Steaua București (FCSB), will receive a monthly salary of €10,000 (approximately $12,000). FCSB confirmed officially on Tuesday, May 19, that Baciu would take over as the team's new head coach. Baciu will be supported by a staff including Lucian Filip, Alin Stoica, Marius Popa, Ionuț Zottu, Horea Codorean, Sorin Bucuroaia, and Alexandru Ioniță.
Prodan believes that Baciu must first prove himself before earning such a significant salary. She also criticized Baciu’s past as an analyst who has publicly criticized FCSB players, suggesting this could affect his relationship with the team. "If I were the president of Steaua, I would argue with Gigi Becali to not give him that salary. He has to show something," Prodan stated. "Players do not forget criticisms, and Baciu will face this in the locker room."
Prodan also commented on the influence of Gigi Becali, stating that his presence overshadows the autonomy of the coaches at FCSB. She argued that Becali’s involvement in decision-making processes at the club stifles the ability of coaches to lead independently. "There is no coach today at Steaua who can make decisions. Gigi has said he wants a coach who listens to him 100%. This is his money, his team, his investment," she added.
Is Gigi Becali's heavy-handed approach at FCSB stifling the club's growth? Baciu's appointment and the salary controversy highlight the need for more autonomy for coaches. What do you think? Let's discuss!
