A Wild Coast Gem Takes the Crown

Nestled near the small town of Aljezur on the rugged western edge of the Algarve, Praia de Monte Clérigo has secured the prestigious title of Best European Beach for 2026. The selection was made by the tourism platform European Best Destinations, recognizing the spot for its stunning Atlantic vistas and commitment to a quieter, more authentic visitor experience.

Often referred to as the "Sunset Beach," this stretch of golden sand has seen a surge in popularity among travelers seeking an escape from mass tourism. The organizers highlighted that the beach appeals to those who value spectacular landscapes and tranquility over crowded party scenes. The area’s natural beauty remains largely preserved, offering a raw and dramatic backdrop against the crashing Atlantic waves.

Local culture plays a significant role in the beach’s charm. Friday evenings are particularly special, with locals and tourists gathering by the ocean. The nearby restaurant O Sargo hosts live concerts and serves fresh seafood, creating a vibrant yet relaxed atmosphere. It is widely considered the best spot in Portugal to watch the sun dip below the horizon, drawing crowds who prioritize mood and scenery over commercial amenities.

How the Winners Are Chosen

The ranking process combines editorial judgment, ecological standards, and visitor feedback. Judges evaluated the beaches based on natural beauty, water quality, accessibility, and family-friendliness. Other critical factors included the authenticity of the destination, available activities, environmental conservation efforts, service quality, nearby accommodation options, and the overall atmosphere. This holistic approach ensures that the selected destinations offer more than just sand and water; they provide a complete, sustainable holiday experience.

Greek Dominance and Global Context

Greek islands dominated the top ten list for the second consecutive year, with five locations making the cut. Notable mentions include Voutoumi on Antipaxos, famous for its crystal-clear turquoise waters and white pebbles, Fteri on Cephalonia, and the iconic Elafonisi on Crete. These destinations continue to set the standard for Mediterranean coastal beauty.

Other Mediterranean hotspots also performed well. Italy’s Bolgheri beach, known for its colorful houses and laid-back vibe, took fifth place. Spain’s Cala Mesquida on Mallorca secured the sixth spot. However, no Croatian beaches made it into the final top ten this year, marking a shift from previous rankings.

On a global scale, the title of Best Beach in the World for 2026 went to Entalula on the Philippine island of Palawan, according to the World's 50 Best Beaches list. The jury praised its impressive limestone cliffs, white sand, and remarkably low visitor numbers compared to other regional favorites. The clean, calm waters made it an ideal spot for swimming and photography, proving that the world’s most beautiful shores are still hiding in less crowded corners.
