A Spiritual Homeland on Mount Athos
Serbian Patriarch Porfirije has reaffirmed the profound spiritual connection between the Serbian people and Vatoped Monastery, describing the ancient monastery on Mount Athos as a spiritual homeland where the Serbian identity was born and nurtured. Speaking at a conference titled "The Relationship Between Vatoped Monastery and Orthodox Serbs at the Crossroads of Past and Present," the Patriarch emphasized that without the monastic community, the Serbian people would not exist in their current form—sealed by the light of saints such as Saint Sava, Saint Simeon, and Saint Prince Lazar.
The event coincided with the visit of the Holy Belt of the Theotokos to Serbia, a revered relic currently housed in Belgrade. Porfirije stated that the relic serves as a unifying force for all Orthodox Christians, transcending ethnic divisions. "The Theotokos connects all Orthodox Christians and makes us one people, because she bore the Lord who is the head of the church, our God, who makes no distinction between peoples," the Patriarch explained.
Brotherhood and Historical Ties
Porfirije expressed deep gratitude to Archimandrite Jevrem, the hegumen of Vatoped, and the monastic brotherhood for bringing the Holy Belt to Serbia. He described the gesture as a testament to love and trust in the Theotokos, affirming that the Serbian people remain a chosen nation with a clear spiritual identity. "We are not lost, we are not without hope, but we know very well who we are, where we come from, and what our ultimate goal is," he said.
The Patriarch also highlighted the enduring brotherhood between the Serbian and Greek peoples. He noted that this bond, rooted in shared history and faith, reflects the unity of Christians who worship one Lord. "We are Christ's peoples, one church, and we have one Lord whom we glorify now and forever. Amen," Porfirije concluded.
Government and Public Response
Nenad Popović, the Serbian minister responsible for international economic cooperation and the social status of the church, echoed these sentiments. He stated that the Holy Belt bears witness to centuries of connection between Serbs, Mount Athos, and Vatoped. Popović noted that these relations began in the time of Saint Sava and Saint Simeon the Myrrh-streaming, laying the foundations of Serbian spirituality, statehood, and identity.
The minister thanked Patriarch Porfirije for inviting Archimandrite Jevrem and the monastic community to Belgrade. He also praised the faithful who have gathered in continuous lines day and night at the Temple of Saint Sava to venerate the relic. "The faithful people feel the spiritual power of the Holy Belt, and this spiritual connection indicates that the protection of the Mother of God is constantly present over the Serbian people," Popović said.
Archimandrite Jevrem emphasized that the conference underscores the enduring link between the Athonite monastery and Serbia, noting that Saint Sava and Saint Simeon were the foundations of the Serbian state and church, emerging from the spiritual soil of Vatoped.
