A Bombshell From the Medical Room

The echoes of Mircea Lucescu's passing still ring through the corridors of Romanian football, but a new voice has shattered the silence. Pompiliu Popescu, the 75-year-old former doctor for the Romania national football team, has launched a scathing public indictment. He points a trembling finger at the Romanian Football Federation (FRF), declaring them morally responsible for the tragic death of the legendary "Il Luce."

Lucescu, the titan of the pitch, breathed his last on April 7, 2026, at the age of 80. The heartbreak of failing to guide the tricolors to the World Cup, compounded by the agony of the playoff defeat against Turkey, seemed to break the old lion. But Popescu argues it was not just grief that took him. It was a system designed to crush.

The Meat Grinder of Management

Popescu, who served the national setup for 26 years from 1990 to 2016, never worked directly under Lucescu. Yet, his witness is damning. In a recent podcast, he stripped bare the toxic culture within the federation. He described the FRF leadership as masters of pressure, possessing a "technique and talent" for squeezing managers until they snap. He warned that the current environment is a meat grinder, where every head coach is viewed as disposable cannon fodder.

"If it goes well, they take the credit. If it fails, it's Lucescu's fault, it's Hagi's fault," Popescu lamented. He fears for the health of the new manager, Gheorghe Hagi, who took the helm recently. Popescu, a veteran who stood beside Golden Generation icons like Ilie Dumitrescu and Gheorghe Popescu through three World Cups and three European Championships, implores Hagi to survive the malice. He was removed from his post in 2016, a decision made by the very federation he now condemns.
