The second-largest city in Bulgaria, Plovdiv, is gearing up for the prestigious Giro d'Italia cycling race on May 10. The city, famous for its ancient architecture and vibrant culture, will transform into a global stage, celebrating the race with a festive atmosphere.
In the heart of Plovdiv, an arch of pink canopies rises, while the town hall building glows in the same color at night. The iconic Pelican Fountain sparkles in pink as well, adding to the festive ambiance. The city has embraced the race with every detail, turning popular landmarks into a colorful celebration.
The mayor of Plovdiv, Kostadin Dimitrov, who is an avid cyclist himself, emphasizes the significance of this event. "On May 10, we will witness a true celebration. One of the largest two-wheeled sports events will bring emotion to our city. While traffic disruptions are inevitable due to closed streets, we have ensured parking spots along the entire route," he assures.
The event is not just about the professional race but also about engaging the local community. A mass cycling parade will precede the official start of the Giro d'Italia, with participants receiving new bicycles as prizes. To join, interested cyclists must register on www.velo-plovdiv.eu.
The cultural foundation "Plovdiv 2019" is organizing cultural events to complement the race, including a concert featuring legendary Bulgarian rock artists and local talents at the Ancient Theatre. The concert is free and will showcase iconic hits from Bulgarian music history.
The race itself will start on May 10 at 13:00 from the Central Square and end near the Sports Hall of Plovdiv University. The city expects thousands of visitors, packed hotels, and a surge in tourism interest during the event.
"Through the Giro, Plovdiv will showcase its potential to the world: the Old Town, Kapana, the Ancient Theatre, and its hospitality," Mayor Dimitrov says. "I urge all Plovdiv residents to come out with their children, experience the atmosphere, and show what we can offer."
The event promises to be a significant milestone for Plovdiv, blending culture and sport into a memorable celebration.
